A Lust For Lead A Tale of the Weird West The Legend of the Devil Guns Book 1 eBook Robert Davis
This is a pretty cool book; it's rare to seen western cowboy/desperado combined with occult fantasy. In "A Lust for Lead", Shane, the protagonist, is the most deadly man alive with a pistol. Having left hundreds dead, with bounties and death sentences from pretty much everywhere he practiced his trade, Shane realized his guns and killing were beginning to take over his personality. To avoid becoming truly damned, he gives up his weapons and lifestyle, and goes into hiding. Six years later, he's captured and brought for mysterious reasons, involving a cursed town and the mythical "Fastest Guns", to a tournament of the greatest killers around. The book definitely felt like a Western gunslinger film to me. There were numerous showdowns and duels, as well as few chase scenes, some larger battles, and the traditional siege of the town sheriff's station/jail. The writing was solid, and the mystery of the Fastest Guns and Shane's own past was dealt out at a good pace. The plot, with a group of damned killers that reminded me somewhat of 19th century variants upon "Spawn", was original, if not massively inspired. My one complaint was I felt like some of the gunfights were a bit repetitive after a while, and could have been fast-forwarded over (eg, by having a flashback occur during a fight, rather than immediately before or after). This would prevent readers getting jaded. Other than that, characterizations, pacing, length and editing all worked well. The occult influence was well balanced as well, neither negligible, nor too pronounced.
Overall, a very solid novel, with room for a sequel. Recommended to fantasy, Western/cowboy, and action readers.

A Lust For Lead A Tale of the Weird West The Legend of the Devil Guns Book 1 eBook Robert Davis Reviews
i have to say i was impressed with the premise. it was right up my alley. it had good enough action to keep me reading. there were a few editing misses but nothing i couldnt get over. im usually bored with western books, but this isnt a typical western book. the author added a nice mix of supernatural premises to spice it up. in my opinion it worked. im looking forward to another one.
Very good story. Downloaded as a free ebook Aug 2011. Read the entire story on my kindle app for the iPhone. Super story. Very suspenseful. Didn't want to put it down! Very well written. My only complaint is that some times I'm the story, the author flashbacks to 6 yrs earlier and there is not a page/line break so it was a bit hard to follow. Now this may be because of reading it on my iPhone and not my kindle, but other then that, it was great. Will look for more stories from this author and could I hope for a sequel?
I really liked the book, even though the author's writing could improve, he can tell a good "what happens next" book. The ONLY thing that bothered me a little is the resemblance to an old (1995) Russel Crowe movie Quick & The Dead
I will be honest I did not have high hopes for this, but when it was on sale I thought "why not." Boy am I glad I did! It's a really interesting blend of occult/horror and a Western story. It reads like a movie at times, with vividly painted imagery that you can clearly see in your mind. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see this one day optioned for a film. It could work.
Fast read, good main character, interesting plot. When it was over, I was hoping there was another in the series, because I want to know what happens to this guy. Can't ask for more than that, right?
If you like westerns, this is an interesting spin. If you like supernatural genre, this is a tad different from most. Put the two together, add spicy character development, stir in a slightly disturbing plot, and heat to a boil with ample action; The result is A Lust for Lead, a truly engaging and enjoyable read. One negative was the tedious use of adjectives in the first few pages...which seemed to temper back as the story progressed; or maybe I got used to and accepted it? Whatever...I really liked the story and will look for more from Robert Davis.
I was honestly surprised by this book. Fast-paced and interesting, "A Lust for Lead" is an original idea, decently executed. Davis has created a unique mythology and works pretty well within the scope of what he's developed. Particularly interesting is the in-depth (if occasionally heavy-handed) gun/demon mythology Davis uses throughout the story. He works it well into the psychology of his characters until the reader begins to wonder whether there actually IS anything supernatural going on, or if it's all in the characters' minds.
Though the book begins with your classic Western Anti-hero, it quickly twists and turns its way into a dark little American West fantasy. The main character, though clearly flawed and morally ambiguous, is likable and cheer-worthy, particularly as he wrestles back and forth with his own shortcomings. The supernatural elements are truly menacing, and create an interesting dynamic for the book throughout.
I will say that, throughout the majority of the book, I had a hard time NOT thinking about "The Quick and the Dead." Davis makes fairly liberal use of the archetypes introduced in that storyline, including the overly cocky kid (complete with female groupie), angry female gunfighter with a grudge and a mission, and the Man who tries to walk away from the life of death and violence, only to get sucked back in, against his will. It was very difficult not noticing the similarities -- enough so that it got a little distracting at times.
Also loses a point for formatting. Let's face it, now that more and more authors are going digital with their works, it's just as important to get it right on the editing and formatting end as it's always been. With "Lust for Lead," I found it occasionally hard to follow (read it took a few sentences in before I found my bearings on occasion), because, on top of going back and forth between past and present (a device which usually works out just fine), there are often no hard breaks to notify the reader. In this edition, there APPEARS to be no rhyme nor reason with how the paragraphs are broken up. The narrative will will take a perfectly normal path, but for some reason be separated with empty space, while segues back and forth in time will be added as another paragraph, as though it's a part of the same narrative space.
I would probably blame this on inattentive editing for the format. It didn't REALLY detract from the reading experience, but it was, again, distracting.
Overall, however, Davis has crafted a very enjoyable, unique tale of dark fantasy, and one well worth a look. I am hopeful that there are sequels in the works, because it is very clear that this story is nowhere NEAR complete.
